September 12 - COQUITLAM
On the evening of September 10th, the Coquitlam Firefighters' hosted a fundraising Gala dinner to raise money for the Breakfast and Snack Program. The program is geared towards curbing hunger in vulnerable children. More specifically, this program is open to all students, thus allowing these children who are vulnerable, the freedom to access the program without the stigma and feeling of being singled out for their family’s financial status.
It is hard to imagine that even in Canada there are children going hungry to school. It is an unfortunate reality, and it is one we as firefighters often get an intimate glimpse when responding to emergencies into some of the homes of those who are vulnerable.
Are we there passing judgement? No, we are there to do our job; but you can’t ignore the fact that even in ALL areas of this community there are families struggling. We believe it takes a village to raise a child, and as a village we can show these children that we care about them and love them.
We asked guests while they looked around the auction table at the many items donated, to remember that they are not just getting a good deal on a gift certificate, they are helping feed a child and allowing her focus at school and rather then the hunger in her belly.
That night was also about celebrating the upcoming 3rd year of this program. We are excited to say that we reached our goal of $15,000 and will be launching the program at Cape Horn Elementary thus making the program 3 schools in total and the potential of serving over 7,000 meals to children.
Thank you for helping us help kids. We hope you enjoyed the event.
We are a group of volunteers and Firefighters in the Coquitlam City doing what we can to give back "Into Our Community!"
